I received Sing A New Song II today
and could not put it down. I finished it all in one setting. I was truly
blessed. Jim

After reading the extremely anticipated book here's what I think about it.
As I read, I was trying to be of "two" minds. While I could relate to a lot
of things that were written because of similar things having happened to my
own brother, I was also trying to be in the mind of someone who has no
knowledge, no experience, in the world of mental retardation. My conclusion
of this well written book would have to be "how could anyone, anywhere, read
this book and not feel compassion?" "How could anyone lay the book down, and,
not feel love from the greatest depths?" The love of the mother for the
child, the love of the child for his parents, siblings and friends, pouring
forth from each page, made my heart swell with pride for this entire family
who, above all else, love unconditionally - the greatest gift we are given by
God and the greatest gift we can give each other.
As I read, I couldn't help but feel other emotions as well. Anger at the
throngs of people who are given an opportunity to help someone who is so
desperately trying to help himself, who turn around and walk away. If only
they could know what a blessing they would receive if they could open their
hearts just enough to get to know someone as humble and loving as
developmentally challenged individuals are. But, no, most usually I believe
that people such as this either are of the mind that what they don't know,
they don't need to know. Or, they believe that others will judge them by
their association. What a sad state of affairs when, in my opinion, we are
all put on this earth to help each other. So, yes, I became angry when I read
that there were such people in Chris's life who treated him shabbily. But,
Chris has become the much better person because he loves everyone, just as God
intended. If we could all be as forgiving as Chris, what a much better world
this would be.
When I finished the book, I felt an overwhelming desire to hug someone. Thank
you, Pat, for sharing your son with the world. And, thank you, Frank, for
sharing your life with your brother - your entire life is a symbol of the true
meaning of "sibling". God bless all of you now and for always.
